SEO is of course search engine optimization and search engine optimization is the process of optimizing, or making your site good for, natural search engine rankings. I use the term natural search engine rankings to simply differentiate SEO from the purchased, or sponsored search engine rankings. So what is important in search engine optimization? There are two primary ideas of search engine optimization – that of on-page seo and that of off-page seo.

As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, important noticeable efforts which include adding perfect content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users. Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove them from their indexes.

The initialism "SEO" can also refer to "search engine optimizers", a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.
Now, I guess you have a website or developing one and you want to get it to the top search engine rankings. Well, If you have money I suggest you pay to an experienced SEO consultant working for one of the top SEO companies.
Yet, if you do not have money, you can try doing it alone. But, be warned – a good SEO solution is time consuming. No matter which SEO software or SEO service you will be using, it will take you at least a couple of months to get your website to top search engines ranking.

Keyword Analysis

Keyword research is about the most important part of your success. You can be great at implementing all the proper SEO techniques, but it will all be in vain if you target the wrong keywords. This article will describe briefly how keyword research works.

First let me explain what keywords are. Sometimes there is some confusion about it, caused by the meta keywords tag (meta name=”keywords” content=”keyword1,keyword2,keyword3,etc.) Keywords are not the words you can find in the meta keywords tag:

Keywords are the words that you choose to be found for in the search engines.

Each page can have a set of keywords or keyword phrases that you target. The best would be to target just one keyword phrase per page. However, if your web site has just a few pages you can target more than 1 keyword phrase per page, but 3 is the absolute maximum.

So now that we know what keywords are and how many to target with each page, we need to find out what keywords to choose. This is where the research begins. What you need to know is how often your keyword phrases are searched for. Choosing a keyword phrase that is searched for just once a month has little use. You need to target those keyword phrases that are actually used a lot.

There are different resources to do keyword research, but the most important I believe is your brain. Just imagine what a searcher (and not you) would type in that little box of a search engine to find what your web site has to offer. Then use the keyword suggestion tools to find out if they really are used a lot or not.

In order to be successful in getting the high positions in the search engines you also need to know how much competion there is for a word. Keywords or keyword phrases that are very competitive need more than just a well optimized page to rank high in the search engines. Off-the-page factors like link popularity and anchor texts in the links that point at your web page are very important to consider when choosing keywords.

In conclusion keyword research is the first and most decisive step you will take when optimizing your web site. It will determine how successful you will be.

Effective ways to build links

Link Baiting

This is the single most important method. It has mainly to do with good content that gets links the natural way. To keep things simple in this guide I have decided that everything that makes people link to you because of the content on the page/site falls under this category of link baiting. You need to read this post I wrote on link baiting.
Comments: Pure white hat, recommended but sadly not very effective if not something real major.

Directory submissions/Link Building using directories

There are specialized SEOs and Link Builders that are doing directory submissions. There are 4 kinds of directories here: pay-for-inclusion, reciprocal required, free and niche directories. And there are of course specialists in each one of these. There are almost one thousand free SEO friendly general directories, a list of these and a submission service can be seen here. As for placement in reciprocal directories there are both brokers and non-brokers.
Comments: Cheap way to get many low quality links. Can take months before effect is seen. Deep links usually not possible. New edit and comment on this: since BigDaddy Google has been smashing and deindexed internal pages on a lot of directories, but the indexed pages still show a PR value even though they are deindexed. Keep this in mind and run a site: command or type the URL of the internal page in Google to see if the directory/page has been hit.

Link Exchange, 2 and 3 ways

The good old way. I link to you and you link to me. This is more useful if you have 30 or more sites as you can get and provide relevant links. Rule of thumb: you contact people, not the opposite. There are also Reciprocal Link Programs but I don’t recommend that.
Comments: Don’t overdue it …

High PR-subscriptions (Grey Hat?)

You can rent PR 5-9 text links at various places for various prices. Cheap places I had some very good success with: here, here and here.
Comments: Don’t get too many high PR links too fast, get relevant if possible.

Link-Vault

I am myself getting 200 permanent links a day from this program to 40 URLs, all with varied anchor. The links you get from this program are mostly footer links and other low quality links but the program is extremely powerful. Do not, I repeat, do not display Link-Vault ads on your most valuable web sites - that is a red flag, especially since BigDaddy.
Comments: Only negative is that the links are mostly footer and the relevancy is not that good, other than that it is great.

DP Coop Ads (Grey Hat)

This program gives you a lot of rotating temporary backlinks from mostly footers of sites. I have been using this program successfully to boost SERP ranks in Google, especially at the V7N SEO contest. This program is extremely powerful as well as dangerous and can have your site banned or harmed if you are not careful. My rule of thumb: maximum 5K weight on a single ad. At one moment I had 120K weight and I was getting many many thousands of links to more than 40 ads that I had.
Comments: Remember that these are all footer, irrelevant, temporary and with fast growth.

Linking from your own web sites

This is an excellent way if you have many relevant pages in the same niche.
Comments: Don’t interlink all, keep sites on different C-class IPs and avoid patterns.

Pay bloggers

You can post on the business section of webmaster forums stating that you will pay to get the blogger to blog about and link to your site. Example.
Comment: Good to get the word out. The blog post will over time be buried down in the blog structure.

Article submission

Write an article with links in the article and/or in the resource section to your site. Or pay somone to write these for you. Use specialist (example) to have these submitted to article directories such as this one.
Comment: Long term strategy, takes time to see effects. Can be good for traffic.

Search the SERPS and make offers. (Jim Boykins speciality)

Yahoo and MSN both gives some extremely valuable information in regards to backlinks. Both of the engines tend to list the site with the most link power first in a backlink query. Study and understand the following queries:

seo linkdomain:seobook.com -site:seobook.com linkdomain:seomoz.org -site:seomoz.org -link:jimwestergren.com (MSN or Yahoo)
= Sites containing SEO, that link to both seobook.com and seomoz.org but not to jimwestergren.com.
site:jimwestergren.com link building (Google)
= Which page on the domain jimwestergren.com is most relevant and has the most power for the query link building?
site:jimwestergren.com (Yahoo)
= Which page on the domain jimwestergren.com has the most power? Not always the home page and the list is interesting to see. You can do the same in Google if you find the right query, valid example.

Use both of the above examples in this technique and send off a nice e-mail on your link offer to the ones you choose.
Comment: Expensive …

Make directories and make the link submitter reciprocal to a site of your choice.

I use this on 2 general directories of mine. My directories are free but the link submitter gets his link featured if he reciprocal with my other site. I get about 10 links per week using this.
Comments: Irrelevant, certain percantage come from bad neighbourhood and not always from same language.

Write testimonials and reviews

Write and send a testimonial to your web host, web designer, web developer and SEO. They probably publish it at their site and if you are lucky they link to you as well. Send a review to your favorite sites and have your name and link at the bottom of it.
Comments: Time consuming …

Links under articles

This is a new method I developed myself, here. In the future I think more will start to use this as well. It enables to link builder to exactly specify which articles, the anchor and the URL of each link. Good for deep pages.
Comments: All same IP. Permanent. There are more ways but the ones above are the ones that I deem effective,

Use a mix of all the above ways to get links but follow what you wrote down when you studied your link profile. Good luck!

71 ways to build links

Love for Lists 1. Build a "101 list". These get Dugg all the time, and often become "authority documents". People can't resist linking to these (hint, hint).
2. Create 10 easy tips to help you [insert topic here] articles. Again, these are exceptionally easy to link to.
3. Create extensive resource lists for a specific topic (see Mr Ploppy for inspiration).
4. Create a list of the top 10 myths for a specific category.
5. Create a list of gurus/experts. If you impress the people listed well enough, or find a way to make your project look somewhat official, the gurus may end up linking to your site or saying thanks. (Sometimes flattery is the easiest way to strike up a good relationship with an "authority".)
Developing Authority & Being Easy to Link At

6. Make your content easy to understand so many people can understand and spread your message. (It's an accessibility thing.) 7. Put some effort in to minimize grammatical or spelling errors, especially if you need authoritative people like librarians to link to your site. 8. Have an easily accessible privacy policy and about section so your site seems more trustworthy. Including a picture of yourself may also help build your authority.
PPC as a Link Building Tool

9. Buy relevant traffic with a pay per click campaign. Relevant traffic will get your site more visitors and brand exposure. When people come to your site, regardless of the channel in which they found it, there is a possibility that they will link to you.
News & Syndication

10. Syndicate an article at EzineArticles, GoArticles, iSnare, etc. The great thing about good article sites is that their article pages actually rank highly and send highly qualified traffic. 11. Submit an article to industry news site. Have an SEO site? Write an article and submit to WebProNews. Have a site about BLANK? Submit to BLANKinformationalsite.com. 12. Syndicate a press release. Take the time to make it GOOD (compelling, newsworthy). Email it to some handpicked journalists and bloggers. Personalize the email message. For good measure, submit it to PRWeb, PRLeap, etc. 13. Track who picks up your articles or press releases. Offer them exclusive news or content. 14. Trade articles with other webmasters. 15. Email a few friends when you have important relevant news asking them for their feedback and/or if they would mind referencing it if they find your information useful. 16. Write about, and link to, companies with "in the news" pages. They link back to stories and blog posts which cover their developments. This is obviously easiest if you have a news section or blog. Do a Google search for [your industry + "in the news"]. 17. Perform surveys and studies that make people feel important. If you can make other people feel important they will help do your marketing for you for free. Salary.com did a study on how underpaid mothers were, and they got many high quality links.
Directories, Meme Trackers & Social Bookmarking

18. This tip is an oldie but goodie: submit your site to DMOZ and other directories that allow free submissions. 19. Submit your site to paid directories. Another oldie. Just remember that quality matters. 20. Create your own topical directory about your field of interest. Obviously link to your own site, deeplinking to important content where possible. Of course, if you make it into a truly useful resource, it will attract links on its own. 21. Tag related sites on sites like Del.icio.us. If people find the sites you tag to be interesting, emotionally engaging, or timely they may follow the trail back to your site. 22. If you create something that is of great quality make sure you ask a few friends to tag it for you. If your site gets on the front page of Digg or on the Del.icio.us popular list, hundreds more bloggers will see your site, and potentially link to it. 23. Look at meme trackers to see what ideas are spreading. If you write about popular spreading ideas with plenty of original content (and link to some of the original resources), your site may get listed as a source on the meme tracker site.
Local & Business Links

24. Join the Better Business Bureau. 25. Get a link from your local chamber of commerce. 26. Submit your link to relevant city and state governmental resources. (Easier in some countries than in others.) 27. List your site at the local library's Web site. 28. See if your manufacturers or retailers or other business partners might be willing to link to your site. 29. Develop business relationships with non-competing businesses in the same field. Leverage these relationships online and off, by recommending each other via links and distributing each other's business cards. 30. Launch an affiliate program. Most of the links you pick up will not have SEO value, but the added exposure will almost always lead to additional "normal" links.
Easy Free Links

31. Depending on your category and offer, you will find Craigslist to be a cheap or free classified service. 32. It is pretty easy to ask or answer questions on Yahoo! Answers and provide links to relevant resources. 33. It is pretty easy to ask or answer questions on Google Groups and provide links to relevant resources. 34. If you run a fairly reputable company, create a page about it in the Wikipedia or in topic specific wikis. If it is hard to list your site directly, try to add links to other pages that link to your site. 35. If you buy a product or service you really like and are good at leaving testimonials, many of those turn into links. Blogs & the Blogosphere

45. Start a blog. Not just for the sake of having one. Post regularly and post great content. Good execution is what gets the links. 46. Link to other blogs from your blog. Outbound links are one of the cheapest forms of marketing available. Many bloggers also track who is linking to them or where their traffic comes from, so linking to them is an easy way to get noticed by some of them. 47. Comment on other blogs. Link Trading

55. Swap some links. What?! Did we really just recommend reciprocal link building? Yes, on a small scale, and with relevant partners that will send you traffic. Stay away from the link trading hubs and networks. 56. In case you didn't get the memo — when swapping links, try to get links from within the content of relevant content pages. Do not try to get links from pages that list hundreds of off topic link partners. Only seek link exchanges that you would consider pursuing even if search engines did not exist. Instead of thinking just about your topic when exchanging links, think about demographic audience sets.
Buying Sites, Renting Links & Advertisements

57. Rent some high quality links from a broker. Text Link Ads is the most reputable firm in this niche. 58. Rent some high quality links directly from Web sites. Sometimes the most powerful rented links come direct from sites not actively renting links. 59. Become a sponsor. All sorts of charities, contests, and conferences link to their sponsors. This can be a great way to gain visibility, links, and a warm feeling in your heart. 60. Sell items on eBay and offer to donate the profits to a charity. Many charities will link both to the eBay auction and to your site. 61. Many search algorithms seem biased toward older established sites. It may be faster to buy an old site with a strong link profile, and link it to your own site, than to try to start building authority links from scratch.

63. Get sued by a company people hate. When Aaron was sued by Traffic Power, he got hundreds or thousands of links, including links from sites like Wired and The Wall Street Journal.
Freebies & Giveaways

64. Hold a contest. Contests make great link bait. A few-hundred-dollar prize can result in thousands of dollars worth of editorial quality links. Enough said. 65. Build a tool collection. Original and useful tools (and collections of tools) get a lot of link love. What do you think ranking for mortgage calculator is worth? 66. Create and release open source site design templates for content management systems like Wordpress. Don't forget the "Designed by example.com" bit in the footer! 67. Offer free samples in exchange for feedback. 68. Release a Firefox extension. Make sure you have a download and/or support page on your site which people can link to.
Conferences & Social Interaction

69. It is easy to take pictures of important events and tell narratives about why they are important. Pictures of (drunk?) "celebrities" in your industry make great link bait. 70. Leverage new real world relationships into linking relationships. If you go to SEO related conferences, people like Tim Mayer, Matt Cutts, and Danny Sullivan are readily accessible. Similarly, in other industries, people who would normally seem inaccessible are exceptionally accessible at trade conferences. It is much easier to seem "real" in person. Once you create social relationships in person, it is easy to extend that onto the web. 71. Engaging, useful, and interesting interviews are an easy way to create original content. And they spread like wildfire.

Blog Commenting

What’s The Purpose of Blog Comments?

I have several distinct goals when it comes to leaving comments on other peoples blogs. They are:

Grab the attention of the readers
Grab the attention of the blogger
Develop my personal brand
Create some backlinks

It’s quite amazing that blog commenting can do so much really! But something I noticed was that each of those goals requires a slightly different strategy.

Grab the Attention of the Readers

The primary purpose of blog commenting is to gain new readers by enticing readers of the target blog to my own. I believe there are three crucial factors to achieving this:

Quality of the comment - ‘great post’ is not going to get a click
Being an early commenter - not many people read the 50th comment
Commenting on current posts - activity is usually highest on a fresh post

To achieve these things, I need to strive to be one of the first people to comment on a post. Success here is largely a matter of geography. I am based in the UK so many of the high-traffic US blogs such as John Chow are published when I am asleep. By the time I see the posts, there are already many comments. There’s not a lot I can do about this. However it has allowed me to be an early commenter on Australian blogs for the same reason. So it’s all swings and roundabouts - no matter where you live, there will be some blogs you can comment on early, and others you can’t. Just make the most of the ones you can and don’t sweat the others.

Grab The Attention of the Blogger

On the flip side, timing has no relevance when it comes to attracting the attention of the blogger because most bloggers will read all comments, no matter how far down in the list they are, and no matter how old the post. This is mainly a consideration when I decide to check out a new blog. I will get the last 20 or 30 posts and work through them, leaving comments where appropriate. The readers probably won’t see any of these but the blogger will and he or she will suddenly see my name pop up in his comment list several times. If they are anything like me, they’ll click through to see who this new active commenter is. Attention grabbed!

Develop my Personal Brand

My brand is my name, and I suppose my picture. The way to reinforce my brand is simply to be everywhere! That way, people start to recognise the name and human curiosity may eventually result in a click through. Of course, being everywhere is very time consuming and that is where the Top Commentator plugins come in very useful. I have found that the majority of blogs that use the TC plugin reset it monthly. As long as I keep myself on that list, my name (and link) stays there for a whole month. The higher up I am on the list, the better it looks. So, when checking out a new blog for the first time, I’ll have a look at their plugin and determine just how many comments I would have to leave to get on it - this is something else which is not time sensitive. But, and this is a big but - I will not post trash just to get on the list! There are some blogs that are so popular that getting on the list requires a huge number of comments. I’m not trying to game anybody so if that is the case, I regard that blog as if it does not have the plugin.

Get Some Backlinks

I don’t even have to think about this one. Loads of the blogs I visit are do-follow and the TC link is usually do-follow as well so I tend to just ignore this one and know that I’m getting backlinks a lot of the time.
